Apple Strudel

apple strudel

Pimm’s, warm apple juice, cloves, this Apple Strudel cocktail has it all.

The Pimms which you will normally find available is Pimms No 1 Cup which may lead you to wonder whether there is a No 2 Cup (or 3 or 4). No 1 Cup is gin-based and was created in 1840 by Mr James Pimm.

Pimms No 2 to 7 Cups were all discontinued in 1970. Pimms No 2 Cup is based on Scotch Whisky, No 3 Cup is brandy-based and is available seasonally as Pimms Winter Cup. No 4 Cup is based on dark rum and No 5 Cup is based on rye whiskey. Vodka based No 6 Cup has been reintroduced due to customer demand and No 7 Cup was based on tequila but was never really very popular in Britain and Europe.

Pimms No 3 and 4 Cups were introduced as heated cold weather or winter versions of the summertime Pimm No 1 Cup. Occasionally you will find Pimm’s Blackberry & Elderflower and this is our version of the “official” recipe which just calls for adding lemonade.

Ingredients:

  • 60ml Pimm’s Blackberry & Elderflower
  • Apple juice to fill
  • 35ml double cream
  • 3 cloves
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • A sprinkle of chocolate powder

Method:

  1. Put the Pimm’s and cloves into your Milk Frother and then top up with the apple juice to the max mark.
  2. Press the start button and wait until finished.
  3. Meanwhile, heat up your glass using hot water from a kettle.
  4. When your milk frother has finished, empty the water out of the glass and fill with your Hot Cocktail.
  5. Slowly pour the double cream on top. Garnish with a grating of nutmeg and sprinkle of chocolate powder.
  6. Enjoy your Apple Strudel.

Mark’s Top Tip: While we were travelling (when we were still allowed), it became noticeable that Pimms is not readily available in mainland Europe. This was a major concern to my wife, Lucy, and eventually I did some research (googling) and found that I could make a reasonable stab at reproducing it. Equal quantities of gin and red vermouth plus a generous splash of Cointreau seems to keep her happy. We’ve even tried upscaling the quantities to make large batches, and it worked perfectly. The big batch was 1l gin, 1l red vermouth, 250ml Cointreau (or orange liqueur) plus 2l of lemonade to top it all off.

Why not try reproducing No 3 and No 4 Cups? Replace the gin with brandy for a fake No 3 Cup and dark rum for a fake No 4 Cup.

Drink responsibly and enjoy
