Avalanche

I was looking around the internet, trying to find a whisky-based cocktail that I could turn into a Hot Cocktail and found “The Avalanche”. The only problem was that there were ten different recipes, including some with vodka or gin.

I’ve had to work very hard to adapt and tweak the recipes and just accept that our Avalanche will be totally different from the one you tried before. This recipe is based on a recipe from 1001 cocktails. I used Jameson Irish Whiskey because that is what I had to hand. There really is no need to spend extra money on good whisky or whiskey, once all the other ingredients are in your glass the difference in taste will be marginal, at best.

The other vodka-based recipes add in other flavourings such as Ameretto, creme de cacao and creme de bananes. Try them and see if you prefer that taste then let us know. Difford’s Guide gives us a recipe with all of the above but takes out the spirits. Difford’s also says that this cocktail was invented in 1979 in New York.

Method:

  1. Put all of the ingredients into your Milk Frother and then top up with milk to the max mark.
  2. Replace the lid and then press the start button and wait until finished.
  3. Meanwhile, heat up the glass using hot water from a kettle.
  4. When your milk frother has finished, empty the water out of the glass and fill with your Hot Cocktail.
  5. Enjoy your Avalanche.

Mark’s Top Tip: Try different flavour combinations, Cointreau instead of Tia Maria is extremely good and of course Kahlua can readily be swapped for Tia Maria. As previoulsy mentioned try gin or vodka instead of the whisky. The permutations are almost unlimited.
