Grzane Piwo

grzane piwo

Grzane Piwo or Polish Mulled Beer. To be honest I’ve never tried Polish Mulled Beer and have never been to Poland itself but it’s certainly a place on my bucket list. Apologies in advance if this recipe is nothing like how you remember this drink.

The thought of adding flavours or spices into beer fills me with dread but then I got to thinking about it. In the UK it is not uncommon to add lemonade to beer. In Germany they go a step further and add syrup shots, Berliner Weisse beer is often enjoyed with an added shot of raspberry syrup or Waldmeister, a herbal syrup made from Woodruff. In some parts of France and Spain, they have a large choice of syrups for adding to your beer.

It isn’t easy to pry a beer from me and especially if it is just for experimenting but I took one for the team and here is my interpretation of Grzane Piwo taken from Polish Housewife. My version means you still get the choice of drinking a half can of unsullied beer if you’re not keen on the taste or use it to make another Grzane Piwo if you are.

Ingredients:

  • Half a can of beer (approx)
  • 1 Cinnamon stick
  • 2 Whole cloves
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • 2 Thin peeled slices of fresh ginger
  • Orange juice to top up

Method:

  1. Fill your milk frother 2/3rds full of beer, add in all the spices and top up with orange juice to the fill line.
  2. Replace the lid and then press the start button and wait until finished.
  3. Wait until your milk frother has finished and pour straight into your preheated glass.
  4. Enjoy your Grzane Piwo.

Mark’s Top Tip:– Instead of adding all of the spices I substututed them with 30ml Spiced Apple Winter Warmer syrup. Needless to say I used the remaining beer to make a second Grzane Piwo. Other alternatives include using apple juice instead of orange juice and trying different beers and lagers. One day we will travel to Poland and we’ll see how close I got to right taste.
