American Grog

This recipe for American Grog will wake you up and give a great buzz to your evening. Rye Whiskey is our recommended spirit but as always, experiment. Try it with Bourbon, Scotch or Irish whiskey.

Grog came from the British Navy tradition of adding water to the sailors rum ration. Admiral Edward Vernon started adding lime juice and sugar in an effort to combat scurvy amongst the sailors.

The practice of giving sailors their daily ration of rum carried over to the American Navy and Robert Smith, then the Secretary of the Navy, experimented with substituting native rye whiskey for the imported rum concoction. Finding the American sailors preferred it, he made the change permanent.

Ingredients:

  • 50ml Rye Whiskey.
  • 15ml fresh lemon juice
  • 1tsp white sugar
  • Water to fill

Method:

  1. Put everything in your milk frother and then top the liquid level up to the max with water.
  2. Replace the milk frother lid and press start.
  3. Wait until your milk frother has finished and pour straight into your preheated glass.
  4. Try different whiskeys and vary the sugar quantities to suit.
  5. Enjoy your American Grog.

Mark’s Top Tip:– Rye Whiskey is a premium product in the UK and whilst it is extremely suited to this Hot Cocktail, you can use a cheaper branded whisky instead or substitute Bourbon and accept that it’s different.
